                                        DARK SIDE OF AMBITION

             Everyone has some ambitions in their lives. The success and failures of life sometimes depend upon how ambitious you are? These ambitions gives you energy to dream and reason to live. But sometimes people become over-ambitious and end up losing their minds to achieve their dreams. History has seen many such people,one of them was Dr.Josef Rudolf Mengele. Science without History is useless,as ultimately Science should be used for benefits of Mankind. Whatever man-kind have achieved in Medical Sciences and Biotechnology has their past hidden in pages of History. But then,there are black chapters of blood-sheds and hatred  in History books which horrifies us even if we try to have quick-look at them. 

Dr.Josef Mengele : The angel of death

         The World War II was result of Ambitions of Fuhrer of Nazi 'Adolf Hitler'. He wanted German to become superpower of Europe and also conquer the East. His childhood ambition to become an Artist ended when he didn't got chance. He could not get Admission to University, due to his average Painting skill. But he had one more Ambition of his life and that was to make World 'Jew-free'. According to him Aryans were superior race and he started killing Jews,Gypsies and Physically/Mentally disabled  population of Europe using Concentration Camps and Mass Massacres. Adolf Hitler was dictator and he somehow convinced entire medical fraternity that the systematic Killing / Mass euthanasia of these people will remove Unwanted creatures on the earth. The killings of Non-Aryan people had to be accompanied with increase in Population of Aryan - Blondes with blue eyes. So Adolf needed help from Genetic scientists.

         Doctor Mengele, PhD in Anthropology and Medicine from reputed Universities saw it as a big opportunity to fulfill his ambition to become well-known name in Research of Heredity. Molecular studies had not discovered DNA then,and only physical observation methods were used during those days. So Dr. Mengele's 21-month stay in Auschwitz extermination camp became the duration of most cruel and inhuman 'human experiments' in the entire Medical history. A patriotic scholar doctor turned into mad butcher and gained a name 'The angel of death'

       Dr. Mengele become Captain (SS officer) of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943. He found a great opportunity in those extermination centers  as he had all the power to use final solution (i.e. to end the Jews).Wearing well-pressed uniform,polished shoes Dr.Mengele used to stand on the entrance on the arrival of new transported Nazi targets.  He would either send them to left to gas chambers or to right to hard labor. This is how he got name 'white angel' who decided deaths to lacs of people by just a  directions of his right hand thumb.Out of 9 million Jews in Europe, Adolf Hitler systematically Murdered 6 million (Two of every three) in several ways.Gassing was one of such cruel method. But those who were not gassed to death in Auschwitz got more  brutal deaths. The human experiments,starvation, poisoning, diseases etc.became reasons of deaths.

        Dr. Mengele carried out several experiments on Jews,Gypsies,Roma - Men,women and children. He had several misconcepts in his mind and didn't had any scientifically correct reasoning for his methods. He was opportunist and became greedy to try and test all his wierd ideas on the large number of available 'Human Guinea-pigs'. Earlier in 1930s it was considered that 'Twins' are the great 'Subjects' to study heredity based diseases and for that purpose 'Twin Rabbits' were used. But in concentration camp Mengele got a chance to use human twins as subjects for carrying out his experiments.


  Dr.Mengele made separate Barracks for keeping Twin children together,he even appointed people to find out twins out of the newly incoming Jews. He selected 1500 pairs of twins out of which only 100 pairs survived later. The twins selected by Dr.Mengele became 'Mengele's children' for whom Dr.Mengele became 'Uncle Mengele'. For Mengele those children were just 'Subjects' of his experiments and less than human beings. He used to distribute chocolates,talk with them, sometimes even play soccer with them and ultimately kill them after his experiments.

           Dr.Mengele used to examine the naked bodies of his subject twins to take primary measurements, weights, and note down the observations. Then he select the elder twin for experiment so as to make changes in his body and compare both twins after the changes. Ultimately after several different experiments the teens would end up on his dissection table. If the child under experiment died during operations, he would kill his live twin immediately to dissect both the subjects to compare them for final conclusion of experiments. He prepared false medical reports of deaths of children and send their organs, livers,brains, eyes to different laboratories and hospitals in the Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm hospital being the most obvious.Most of his experiment were cruel and he would carry out operations without giving Anesthesia to patients. 

Dr.Mengele & his cruel human experiments

           The list of his cruel human experiments is really big.But some of the notorious include.

   Sewing twins together to form 'conjoined twins'.In experiment of creating Siamese twins he sewed hand of twins who ended up dying due to Gangrene caused.

   Injecting chemicals using injections or drops in the eyes of hetero-chromatic patients to change eye color.

     Injecting lethal bacteria in subject to observe stages to death.

  Sterilization of mothers of twins using shock methods.

Incest between twin brother-sister to see what kind of child they give birth to.

Separation of twins from each other to check who lives longer?

Blood transfusion at high level to check effects of blood in twins.

Sex change in the twins to see what difference it makes?

He used to stab twins in their heart with chloroform injection to kill them instantly,dissect both of them and remove every single part to study in detail.

Poisons , Phosphorus,Mucous glands of Mosquito, bacteria, Sea water etc were injected in bodies of patients to check thier responses to deaths.
The list goes on and on...

        The ambitious doctor became evil and butchered several people during his infamous tenure of Auschwitz. Dr. Josef Rudolf Mengele,the Angel of death not only spoiled the name of respected medical profession but also left examples of helenious crimes  perfomed by any Over-ambitious professional. To reach the top of medical career he chose a sinful way; full of bloodshed. 

The name Dr. Josef Rudolf Mengele will be remembered by the History as the Cannibal who carried out holocaust not to eat flesh but to become superior scientist and fullfill his ambition to enter encyclopedia of hereditary related science. 

       The Angel of Death such represents the 'Dark Side of Ambition'.
